Is It Better to Grind or Remove a Tree Stump?

For most yards, grinding is the simpler choice because it takes the stump down below the surface with less disruption. Full removal makes more sense when you need the stump and its main roots out of the ground, such as before building or replanting in the same spot.

How the Two Methods Differ

Stump grinding chips the stump away and leaves most of the roots in the soil. Stump removal digs out the stump, its root crown, and larger nearby roots, which leaves an open hole to fill.

When Grinding Is Usually Enough

  • The goal is to mow over the area
  • You plan to plant grass or low ground cover
  • The stump is in a spot you don’t plan to build on
  • You want less disturbance to the surrounding lawn

When Removal May Be Worth It

  • A patio, walkway, shed, or addition is planned for that spot
  • You want to plant a new tree where the old one stood
  • Sprouts keep coming back from the old roots
  • The area needs to be cleared more completely for a project

Removal usually means more digging, so it takes more time and causes more disturbance. Texas law also requires contacting Texas 811 at least two business days before excavating, even in your own backyard, so buried lines can be marked.
